here..... a short compilation of scientific studies to prove it:
So when you need to indulge because you’ve had a super duper busy day, don’t feel bad sitting down and eating that piece of (dark) chocolate. (TIP: put dark chocolate (broken into their squares) into the freezer….this makes the indulgence last longer, so you feel satisfied longer. IT WORKS!!)
….or when you’re tired and you need to be caffeinated to get you through the day, drop by a Starbucks, or make yourself a cup of joe, guilty-free.
Here, scientific proof that these compounds are good for you:
1. American Chemical Society (ACS) found that certain microbes in our gut converts cocoa into compounds with anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds can be utilized by our body to perform many protective functions. Also, 30% of the dietary fiber fermented by our colon is made up of cocoa powder. Fiber aids in digestion and promotes an overall healthy colon.
- easy to reap the benefit from cocoa powder: sprinkle 1-2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder and add it to your favorite oatmeal, yogurt (especially greek yogurt, since the cocoa powder negates the tartness that is intolerable in greek yogurt by some people), or cereal
The ACS, in a separate study, also concluded that coffee reduces the chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 50%.
2. It prevents dementia: The NIH.gov (National Institute of Health) reported results from a 2010 study, the Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Aging, and Dementia (CAIDE), showing that drinking 3-5 cups of coffee per day at midlife was linked with a decreased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease by 65%. This supports previous studies’s findings that coffee has favorable effects against cognitive decline. In a separate study, the NIH also found that those who drink 4-5 cups of coffee per day are 10% less likely to be depressed than those who do not drink coffee.
3. It prevents cancer: Brigham and Women’s in conjunction with Harvard Medical School followed over 100,000 adults over a 20-year period, and found that people who drink at least 3 cups of coffee a day are 50% less likely to develop skin cancer.
4. CAFFEINE IS good for your workout:
- The Journal of Int Soc Sports Nutrition finds that caffeine 30 minutes before a high-intensity-interval-training interval (HIIT) is good for your performance. Feel free to get that cup of joe right before you leave for the gym!
5. Helps prevent blindness: As discussed by Dr. Oz, Raw coffee contains chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant that has been proven to help retinal degeneration. this helps prevent deteriorating eyesight (a natural progression of certain eye diseases such as glaucoma or cataract)
6. It acts as a natural de-stressor: Inhaling the rich aroma of coffee could make you less stressed: Researchers at the Seoul National University studied the brains of rats that were deprived of adequate sleep, and discovered that once exposed to the aroma of coffee, they had changes in their brain proteins tied to that stress.
I LOVE MY DUNKIN DONUTS, AND I'M NEVER GIVING IT UP!!
