THE ONLY DIET THAT WILL WORK (AND STICK) FOR ANYONE….GUARANTEED
I call it the Eating Whatever the F**** You want….in modest amounts. In this “diet”, you eat the foods that you are used to eating (nothing fancy, no major deviations from your current foods). Basically the concept is that before you eat something, ask yourself “how hungry am I?” give yourself a score from 1-10, 1 being not hungry whatsoever, 10 being completely starved.
- If the score is a 1-3, allow yourself a few bites to satisfy your food craving.
- If your score is a 4-6, eat a small meal (eat until you are no longer hungry, but not until you feel full)
- if your score is a 7-10 then allow yourself a full meal, you probably deserve it (just make sure it takes 25 minutes, at least)
Also, when you do eat, make sure you take 25 minutes to do it. Why? Simple. It takes your body about 25 minutes to tell your brain that its full.
Have you ever tried to eat a burger, or a hot dog, and eat so slow that it takes 25 minutes? i tried this with a hot dog, and for the first time I realized that I gobbled it down in less than 5 minutes. I never noticed myself doing that before--ever, until I actually tried this. I am a pharmacist, and we are notorious for easing very fast (actually one study showed that we are the quickest eaters, when compared to most other professions). Not doing that anymore!!!
other suggestions to avoid mindless eating:
- People who stock up at discount stores eat up to 48% more. If you buy in bulk, put pretzels and other snacks in portion-sized baggies. Never, ever, EVER, eat straight from the box (this is especially important when it comes to ice cream)
- The longer you sit at the table, the more you’ll eat. Studies have shown that people who eat out with friends linger much longer and tend to eat 35% more. TIP: pace yourself with the slowest eater. One of my girl friend is notorious for eating extremely slow. We used to make fun of her, but I now mimic her eating speed, and found myself fuller with much less food than before
- Pre-Plate your food in the kitchen, and you’ll eat 14% less than. If food is spread out on the table, you will tend to eat more
- Studies show taking the salt/pepper OFF the table helps people eat up to 60% less salt
- When eating at a buffet, put only two items on your plate at a time. You will need to make multiple trips (and most likely will not)
- Always eat in the same room of your house, but definitely NOT in front of the TV or computer. One fitness participant in the Biggest Loser has a great tip: "No TV unless you're exercising"
