Healthy Substitutes in cooking, baking, everyday eating

Healthy substitutes for common things in cooking.....cut carbs, calories, fat, by using simple substitutes for daily items....

Instead of using oil to cook your eggs or bacon next time, use spray instead and you could be saving a toll of fat calories.  Also spray down your baking tray the next time and picking up your cookie or taking out that muffin will be that much easier

More protein, less cholesterol, 3g less fat, and tastes the same? Replacing cheddar for 2% will definitely fool your taste buds. Put it on your sub, sandwich, or casserole. Your waistline will thank you

Plain Greek yogurt has almost the exact same texture as sour cream., and the tartness is comparable to the sourness in Sour Cream. Try this substitution in your next burrito and you will be mildly surprised

Choose Fat Free evaporated milk over heavy cream for your next baking project and you could be saving 88 grams of fat per cup (88g of fat is 135% of your daily value). Carnation has some yummy ideas

Grilling burgers for your next get together? Once spices and seasonings are added the taste isn't that much different between turkey or beef burgers. Turkey also carries 22 to 25 grams of protein per 3oz serving, among other goodies that beef doesn't carry.

Ricotta cheese isn't easy to eat, but using them as a spread wherever cream cheese is called for makes it a yummy treat on crackers, Triscuits and Wheat Thins. Add your favorite toppings for a nutritious snack. check out some of my favorites here

Fluff for frosting? PURE GENIUS! with half the carbs and ZERO fat, fluff has the perfect texture to substitute for icing on your favorite cakes. The kids (or adults) won't complain, I promise!

Bob's Red Mill carries a steep price tag, but all their products are wholesome, and this brand appears on more health food sites than most, advocating mostly for whole non-GMO barley, oats, flour, etc.... Try using rolled oats, even if it's not Bob's, for plain bread crumbs to coat your chicken. The fiber will keep you full, satisfied longer than ordinary bread crumbs

Try this for a kicker: I love the crunchiness that croutons add to my salads...and substituting them with almonds ain't a bad choice! More wholesome products, more protein and healthy fats added to my salad? Please sir, may I have some more?

Butter is a necessary evil for our favorite baked goods, from cakes to cookies to muffins. Without them, the flour will not mix, and the cookies will stick to the sheet. With apple sauce, you get a very similar consistency, minus all that fat.

When making smoothies, a ripe banana--you know, especially the type that has brown spots all over it and attracts fruit flies from a mile away---is the best thing you can add to a smoothie. NO SWEETENER will ever be needed. Try my favorite: Avocado smoothie with Coconut Water, sweetened ONLY by a banana and no other sweeteners
